It's my first book of Kundera, in which he stated his own thoughts on novel, with stable, insightful examples; and it definitely won't be my last one.
In the first, second, and fifth part, Kundera used different method---by analyzing history of novel, his own novel and Kafka's novel---to express his idea that: Using an experimental self to explore sth. that can only be explored through novel is the meaning of novel.
In the third and fourth part, Kundera guided readers to see novels in the music point of view; actually he thrilled me with his knowledge and insight of classic music and I've already taken notes on this. ( & )
In the sixth part Kundera built a glossary of important words in his mind, filled with inspiration. And the seventh, that is the last part, I summarized the idea as: "Novel is the echo of God's laughter at human's thinking, by which an imaginary has been built, in which no one has truth and everyone has the right to be understood." You have to read the whole chapter to feel his humor and perception, though.

She's insane, which i loved. Rooted in sadness and pain, what else can we do, except to drink/dance, to write/compose? Writing is not only life, but also human instinct.

I'm not saying the content of his description, which actually definitely has nothing to do with 浅露,而是心底繁复而千回百转的悸动;By 浅露 I'm talking about the way of his description, the ordinary and natural manner, I mean, he's just going forward and forward,

I read through this book on my way to company and back to home, usually on subway. Quite embarrassed because the book is supposed to be read when I was much much younger. I noticed that Qian used a lot of metaphors, mostly original and vivid, to describe or to state. Kundera has divided metaphors into two kinds: decorative(unnecessary) and definitive(essential). Yet I found myself reluctant to recognize which is of which kind. Some metaphors of Qian are among the few things that I still remember several days after my finishing reading his novel, yet...are they essential??
